The $1.7 billion Gold Coast University Hospital is the most significant project of the Queensland Government's $2 billion Health Capital Works Program. Due to open late 2012, this 750-bed referral hospital will become one of Australia's largest tertiary hospitals.
Queensland is undergoing a period of massive transformation. Unprecedented population growth is putting increasing pressure on the state's public health system. In collaboration with Powell Dods Thorpe and Silver Thomas Hanley, we have been working with Queensland Health to determine the site suitability and strategic plan for the new hospital, since 2006. The largest hospital development ever undertaken in the state, it will replace the existing hospital and offer a higher level and greater range of complex care to patients.
Our planning team was also asked to advise on the inclusion of this new hospital in a new integrated Health and Knowledge Precinct, comprising Griffith University Gold Coast campus, the Gold Coast parklands and part of the Southport Lawn Cemetery. This showcase Queensland project is bringing together all our disciplines – from architecture, landscape architecture, interior design and planning – to carefully ensure that we not only meet the needs of today, but allow for the likely demand on healthcare services in the future.
