Amberley Air Force base is fast becoming one of the largest military bases in Australia. Redevelopment is required as it undergoes a transformation from an Air Force base to a joint base that will include a significant Army presence.
The Headquarters Building plays a key role in the management of the base, and is the focal point for relations between defence and the local community.
The design by HASSELL had to suit the intent of the building, while maintaining defence security requirements and achieving a 4-Green Star rating.
The building provides outdoor views and natural light, with double glazing and acoustic insulation to reduce heating and cooling costs, as well as reduce noise impacts from Air Force operations. Rainwater collection for gardens and toilets reduces the water requirement for the building which is essential for Australia's drought affected climate.
Low maintenance building materials will reduce ongoing costs, and interior finishes were also selected for their long term durability.
The $14 million Headquarters building is an important component of the Stage 3 Redevelopment, to support Amberley's transformation into one of Australia's 'super bases'.
