HASSELL envisaged transforming the Darwin Waterfront from a redundant industrial port facility into a world class, mixed-use urban community attracting local residents, business travellers and tourists alike. As key advisor and master planner, we have designed a cohesive, public, mixed-use plan for the site that will be delivered over a number of stages. Stage One focuses on public buildings and spaces including an extensive new public parkland that provides a safe, year-round swimming beach, picnic areas, public promenades, cultural facilities and public art. The Darwin Convention Centre was the first of the community facilities to be completed. Mixed-use buildings, including a Vibe and Medina Hotel and Wharf One Residential were completed in late 2009.
In his jury citation Professor Chris Johnson said: "This project demonstrates the value of development undertaken with vision, with good design quality and with environmental sensitivity. It demonstrates how a single development can have a major impact on the future of a whole city."
