Adelaide Oval Western Grandstand

AT A GLANCE

A flexible, functional sporting and cultural venue with a strong sense of place.

Transformed into a world-class facility, with 14,000 additional spectator seats and upgraded amenities.

Blends old and new through a modern aesthetic sympathetic to its heritage surrounds.

Considered the heart of South Australia’, Adelaide Oval is the city’s most cherished sporting and cultural landmark. The Western Grandstand honours the iconic venue’s heritage while transforming it into a contemporary, world-class facility that is distinctly South Australian.

Designed by Hassell in collaboration with COX Architecture, the design for the Western Grandstand thoughtfully blends the old and the new, creating a modern, flexible, and functional major event venue. The project incorporates elements of the historic George Giffen Stand, Sir Edwin Smith Stand, and Mostyn Evan Stand, and enhances the oval’s longstanding reputation as the most picturesque in the world’.

Adelaide Oval regularly hosts major sporting matches, including cricket and football, as well as large-scale concerts and events. The Western Grandstand added 14,000 spectator seats over four levels and is covered by five striking diagrid roof shells. These highly engineered steel structures each span 30 metres by 30 metres and are supported at only six points. The grandstand stretches from the existing Bradman Stand in the south to the grassed hill in the north, providing magnificent views across Adelaide Oval to the city and hills beyond.

The project also saw the addition of new members’ facilities, including a 650-seat dining room, a 45-metre-long bar with views to the oval, and an elevated, covered outdoor terrace with views across Oval No.2 to the Western Parklands. Two additional bars and kiosks are provided at ground level to service the out the back’ crowd behind the Members’ Stand on the Village Green — a great tradition at major events at the Adelaide Oval.
