A closer look at the New Mount Barker Hospital
Date
The South Australian Government has released the latest designs for the $365.8m New Mount Barker Hospital, showcasing a vital healthcare investment for the Adelaide Hills community.
Designed by Swanbury Penglase and Hassell, the New Mount Barker Hospital significantly expands capacity across the region, delivering more services closer to home while elevating the overall patient and visitor experience.
The hospital will increase inpatient capacity to 102 beds and introduce a broader range of specialist services, including 12 mental health inpatient beds, while expanding the maternity and birthing suites to support a growing population and strengthen the wider health network.
At the heart of the design is a focus on comfort, dignity and care. New single-patient rooms provide privacy and a more personalised healthcare experience, while thoughtfully planned internal spaces support intuitive navigation, staff efficiency, and improved patient outcomes.
The interiors offer warmth and calm, creating a supportive environment that moves beyond traditional clinical settings. Outside, a new central landscaped courtyard will connect the existing and new buildings, creating a unified heart for the hospital. This tranquil green space offers moments of respite, with garden views extending deep into clinical areas.
From arrival through to treatment and recovery, the new Mount Barker Hospital is a high-quality, future-focused environment — one that balances contemporary service delivery with a deep commitment to the wellbeing of patients, families and staff, and the evolving needs of the Adelaide Hills community.
