Monash Velos Accelerator
Victoria’s first dedicated cardiovascular, kidney and metabolic disease research facility in Melbourne’s Monash Technology Precinct transforms innovative medical ideas into reality.
Located on the traditional lands of the Boonwurrung/Bunurong people of the Kulin Nation, the Monash Velos Accelerator stands in deliberate contrast to the Victorian Heart Hospital opposite, while connecting to the existing Monash Biomedical Imaging building. This integration creates a cohesive research environment where clinicians, researchers and industry partners can collaborate as teams grow from developing early-stage concepts to full-scale commercial outcomes.
The workplace is designed around connected neighbourhoods that balance openness with privacy. Shared spaces along central pathways encourage collaboration and chance connections, while private project rooms offer secure environments for industry partners and growing start-ups. Flexible workspaces are designed to adapt as teams evolve, with boardroom and training facilities that scale from small meeting rooms to larger workshops.
The second level breaks away as its own distinct form. Precast concrete and glass reinforced concrete (GRC) elements wrap around a glazed aluminium curtain wall, creating a façade that works hard in terms of functional performance while still making an aesthetic statement. Sculpted vertical aluminium sunshades temper Melbourne’s afternoon sun, while large windows connect the interiors with the surrounding mature trees and landscape.
