Redcliffe Hospital serves one of Queensland’s fastest-growing coastal communities. The expansion transforms the hospital into a more connected health campus — one that delivers modern healthcare while creating a greener, more welcoming place for patients, staff, visitors and the wider community.
Rather than imposing on their surroundings, the collection of new buildings — which includes 255 new beds as well as expanded services across maternity, endoscopy services and operating theatres — are carefully woven into the site’s existing landscape. This includes prominent operational buildings and a culturally significant native Scar Tree bearing marks created by First Nations people generations ago through the careful removal of bark for canoes, shields or shelter.
A defining feature of the project is the arrival experience. A new front door for the hospital changes the way it meets the community, unfolding into a sequence of public spaces that feel intuitive to move through and are designed for everyday life — not just healthcare.
At the hospital’s heart is the main entry garden plaza, centred around a significant Scar Tree. Developed in close consultation with the local Kabi Kabi community, the plaza celebrates this important cultural landmark through generous landscapes and native planting, a yarning circle and shaded gathering spaces that invite people to slow down, sit, enjoy the coastal breezes, and connect — with each other, and with Country. Ongoing engagement with Indigenous Elders and Cultural Knowledge Holders shapes the design, ensuring Country continues to inform how the space is experienced.
Landscape is the connective thread across the campus. A green spine of tree-lined avenues, shaded pathways, gardens and flexible public spaces links new and existing buildings, making movement easier while creating opportunities to pause, recover and connect. A series of terraced rooftop gardens also provide restorative outdoor spaces tailored to nearby clinical functions.
Throughout the campus, architecture, landscape and interiors work together to create a more human-centred healthcare environment. Since mid-2025, Hassell has led more than 200 design-focused workshops with clinicians, staff and key hospital stakeholders, shaping a campus that supports the delivery of high-quality clinical care while responding to the needs of those who use it every day. Physical, visual and sensory connections to nature are maximised through daylight, greenery and access to outdoor spaces to support wellbeing and help reduce the stress often associated with healthcare environments.
