How one Sydney workplace is rethinking the office as a clubhouse for hybrid work
How do you design for the Tuesday hum without leaving Friday in the shadows?
Hassell’s workplace strategy and interior design for a Sydney investment firm responds to one of the defining challenges of contemporary work: how to create a hybrid workplace that feels energised on busy days, but never empty or underused on the quieter ones.
In response to the shifting purpose of workplace expectations, the firm needed more than a new office layout. Hassell developed a guiding framework designed to connect the firm’s offices globallynationally, while allowing each location to retain its own identity.
Built around the idea of “less me, more we”, the design flips the traditional workplace layout — reducing the emphasis on desk space and dedicating more room to a richer mix of settings for connection, collaboration and culture. This clubhouse-style model brings together shared zones, energetic social hubs and flexible spaces, balanced with acoustic retreats and restorative sanctuaries to give people choice in how they work across the day.
We’re addressing the realities of hybrid work. Rather than designing for fixed attendance or one-size-fits-all workstyles, the design approach supports the peaks and troughs of office life — from the “Tuesday buzz” of busy team days to quieter periods requiring focus and calm.
Working collaboratively with staff and designing for equity and inclusion were fundamental in ensuring the workplace was shaped by the people who use it.
The firm’s workplace has become a place to gather, and a welcoming clubhouse for the way we work today.
