COX Architecture and Hassell appointed as the design team for Brisbane Stadium
COX Architecture and Hassell have been appointed by the Queensland Government as the design team for the new Brisbane Stadium — the centrepiece for AFL, Cricket and entertainment in Queensland, and the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Located within the Victoria Park precinct, this stadium is set to capture the world’s attention, playing host to the unforgettable Opening and Closing Ceremonies and the heart-stopping Athletics events expected in 2032. But the ambition reaches far beyond two weeks of global sporting celebration: in legacy mode, Brisbane Stadium will stand as the city’s new hub for AFL, cricket, headline concerts, and international acts — a generational leap forward in Queensland’s future.
Our combined teams at COX Architecture and Hassell bring a proven track record in shaping Australia’s major sporting venues, such as the award-winning Optus Stadium in Perth, the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), and the revitalised Adelaide Cricket Ground. As Queensland-based and Australian-owned practices, our focus has always been on creating places that are deeply embedded in their communities — and Brisbane Stadium will be no exception.
The design team will be supported by a strong consultancy team including Azusa Sekkei, Arup and sbp, and Blaklash – an Indigenous-owned consultancy guiding meaningful and ongoing First Nations engagement throughout the project.
“We are humbled and delighted to have been awarded the project which will be a Stadium for all of Queensland. The Stadium will be of the Park and be a catalyst for increasing the connectivity, useability and amenity of Victoria Park. It will have a critical role in 2032 but its life after the Games will be its most important legacy for the community.” Richard Coulson, Chair of the Board of Directors, COX Architecture
“The design for Brisbane Stadium will provide enduring cultural value and enjoyment for the community all year-round. It goes beyond just meeting the needs of major international events by ensuring the venue can be adapted for a wide variety of sporting and cultural uses, making it a genuine asset for the whole community. It will not only deliver a world-class experience for athletes and fans but provide Brisbane with a vital piece of sporting infrastructure of true global calibre – a place all Queenslanders will be proud of.” Lucy O’Driscoll, Managing Principal, Hassell
Brisbane Stadium will capture the spirit and openness of the city and state — shaped by Queensland, for Queensland. This won’t just be a venue; it will be a civic landmark, channelling the humble confidence of the classic Queenslander architecture and embracing the climate, lifestyle, and cultural identity of the region. With a strong emphasis on sustainability, accessibility, and First Nations principles, we’ll work alongside the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority to deliver a future-ready stadium that will welcome the world in 2032 and serve generations to come.
Queensland’s moment to shine is here. Let the Games begin.
