Introducing Mark Damant

Recently appointed Hassell Principal, Mark Damant, is fascinated by the way people use the built environment and the experiences designers can create to make better places for people.

“As designers we must always remember the end users of places and spaces we design, otherwise we just creating self-indulgent sculpture. This is one of the things that has always drawn me to Hassell, as they have a very clear focus on designing places people love,” Mark said.

Mark joins Hassell following extensive experience in Australia, Asia, and South Africa, where most recently, he worked on diverse range of commercial, workplace, masterplanning, and mixed use civic projects for Urbis and Woods Bagot in Brisbane, Australia.

Mark is a big believer in a heavily collaborative and workshop driven approach with a commitment to great design outcomes. With a special interest in clarity and detailed briefing and design strategy, Mark’s portfolio of work includes The Melbourne Museum, Brisbane Square, Westin Hotel and 1 William Street, Brisbane. Recently he was also Design Leader and Director in charge for the city-changing Howard Smith Wharves precinct in Brisbane.

“Aspirations and needs of clients are constantly evolving and changing and the ability to distil a brief and deliver a final built solution that exceeds expectations has always been something that I strive for. We have the ability to change people’s lives, whether that be in public places, workplaces, cultural places, or hotels, and doing that requires detailed design thinking and strategy,” Mark said.

Hassell Principal Kirsti Simpson said this appointment is a natural alignment for the practice and further reinforces the Firm’s design strength in its Brisbane studio.

“We have worked with Mark on a number of projects over the years and have always been impressed, so it is exciting to now have Mark as part of our team,” Kirsti said.

“Hassell has had a great year in Brisbane, winning some major projects including Cross River Rail, and this appointment further solidifies the design quality within our team and sets us up for an exciting year next year,” she said.

Mark will be based in our Brisbane studio, and will also connect across the rest of the practice internationally, especially through the Commercial and Workplace and Urban Design sector networks.
