Fiona Stanley Hospital will offer first-class healthcare, clinical care, research and education - supported by an innovative design that will harness the latest scientific, technological and medical developments

Due for completion in 2013, this biomedical research complex is Phase 1 of a three stage biomedical precinct that will support research and teaching in medical and health sciences, spanning basic research through translational and clinical research to population health

The building integrates teaching and research laboratories in addition to large scale manufacturing and civil engineering research laboratories. It will support various hydraulic, wind, materials and structural and advanced form processing laboratories within its program. The building also aims to act as a 'live learning hub' for students who will occupy the building

The concept driving the design of the school is the sine wave – a metaphor of the simple harmonic motion of the sine wave, abstracting a mathematical phenomenon and relating it to the journey that the learner undertakes in the progression the student undertakes from Year 7 to Year 12

Extensive consultation occurred between HASSELL, the University, workplace environment strategists and key stakeholders with approximately 30 workshops held over eight weeks. HASSELL also consulted with local and international student groups weekly to both inform and develop the concept design, helping stakeholders and the design team to make informed decisions along the journey

The design principles and strategies for the demonstration site will be implemented across the whole of the Eco City through a comprehensive guidelines document

The project achieves a significant innovation by creating a new facility 'without walls', encouraging knowledge exchange and discovery through use of shared spaces and resources

The design is a ribbon of contemporary architectural spaces - distinct learning communities integrated with specialist facilities - woven amongst retained trees that form a signature for the new school

This unique learning environment is an important addition to community infrastructure within a fast-growing high-density commercial and residential precinct

The design solution emphasises the sense of the courtyard as the university's heart, providing a flexible space for events and clear and safe access. Areas of turf have been constructed within clearings giving students grassy areas for relaxation

The design concept is based on distinct learning communities gathered around a shared school heart, the promotion of an adaptable indoor/outdoor learning environment, and a site-specific response to its semi-rural location and microclimate

The Health Sciences Building at Flinders University strategically engages research and teaching groups with each other and the wider community, promoting the exchange of knowledge, the growth of ideas and the pursuit of community health and wellbeing
