STREET WORKS invited entrants to re-imagine spaces in the City of Sydney as dynamic, innovative and sustainable temporary public places that will bring people together in unique ways. The HASSELL concept, called Walk the Line, is a path that connects all six of the STREET WORKS spaces

The North West Rail Link is Sydney's largest transport infrastructure project since work commenced on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The 23 kilometre rail link will cater for future growth in the booming North West region – more than 200,000 people will move into this growth centre over the next 40 years

The recreation and open space network provide high-quality, well-integrated and multi-functional landscaped areas of open space, accommodating a range of recreational and leisure facilities that meet the needs of the local community and also provide for attractive visitor nodes

The Summer Hill Flour Mills master plan presents a rare opportunity to retain and reuse much of the existing industrial fabric of the precinct. The landscaping will introduce open spaces with pedestrian links through the site to access a light rail transport service, currently under construction

Allowing for light into underground areas while also rising at the edges to create two green atriums for interchange movement and improved lines of sight to the underground services, this gesture expanded the project scope to beyond the brief

The project's challenge was to preserve the site's timeless quality, to resist the temptation to embellish the structure with artifice and to ensure that the place became a viable recreation resource for the local community

CERN deserved to have a world first in public realm, and this was the inspiration for the design of Route de Meyrin – the streets and central square that bind and tie together the existing campus and its disparate collection of buildings and elements

The design team explored the theme of 'light and shade' by incorporating the iconic Australian verandas into the design of the four new stations along the Coast to Coast light rail line, to provide protection from the bright Australian sunshine and infrequent torrential rain

Trainshed Way is an urban renewal project that has reinvigorated the Geelong Railway Station precinct by introducing a new street which reorients the station precinct towards the heritage building facade, framing it as the central focal point. This forms a strategic visual and physical connection between the station and the Geelong foreshore

Designed by HASSELL Associate Louise Pearson, the display hangs in the skylights of the new boarding lounge at Brisbane Domestic Airport. It is a series of almost 100, one metre wide, lazer cut butterflies, exquisitely coloured with brass and bronze patinas, varying in intensity

The master plan focuses on the key precincts for development and renewal around the quay and integrates them with their locality, adjacent precincts, as well as future projects and plans. It ensures a cohesive solution that optimises strategic connections with the city, Barangaroo, Walsh Bay and Darling Harbour

Dispensing with the traditional boundary between the Zoo and its surrounds, the new entrance invites visitors to view the sights and sounds of the Zoo from public forecourts.

The journey through the Giant Panda Forest provides visitors with an immersive experience of the Chinese Highlands and enables a variety of viewing opportunities, educational and recreational

The project was delivered through a collaborative procurement model by a team of architects, engineers, community relations professionals and contractors who worked together with the client in one location for more than 12 months

Sustainability was integral to the design. The narrow floorplate of the clubhouse allows fresh air and daylight to penetrate all principal rooms. The building management system is connected to the lights and the mechanical ventilation, activating the adjustable sun shading and closing off air conditioning units as required

The design solution emphasises the sense of the courtyard as the university's heart, providing a flexible space for events and clear and safe access. Areas of turf have been constructed within clearings giving students grassy areas for relaxation

Through the briefing stages PTTEP sought to support existing activities and behaviours of its staff while encouraging knowledge transfer between them. This resulted in strategic zoning of dedicated spaces for both interaction and retreat

A key feature of the kiosk is the 'woven' timber facade, the dappled intricacy of which aims to soften the utilitarian nature of this type of building. The zigzag-cut battens were carefully designed to enable adjacent battens to be cut from one piece of timber – maximising the benefit of this fine material and minimising waste

The design builds on Darwin’s strong cultural heritage, incorporating and interpreting the site’s historic headland landforms, re-establishing natural vegetation, and acknowledging indigenous associations and past uses. It extends the street pattern of the city, bringing it to the water’s edge like ‘fingers’ in the harbour

The overhanging stone elements of the raised podium and tree plinth are under-lit as part of a lighting strategy developed to illuminate the architectural features of the church and surrounding spaces

Magenta Shores successfully weaves a resort development into its local environment through sensitive design and planting, as well as protecting the integrity and beauty of its natural surroundings

Built in the 1970s, the pedestrian mall was the first of its kind in Australia and represented an innovative approach in its creation of a car-free civic space. The redesign continues this legacy of innovation through the installation of a vibrant and robust civic space

A cable is suspended over a pond and playground, on it balances a series of sculptures which take on the shape of abstracted birds in flight. The light shapes pivot and rock in the breeze

HASSELL completed the detailed design and coordinated construction for all urban and landscape elements, which scored an average of nine out of ten on KPI assessment criteria

HASSELL was engaged by the City of Salisbury to prepare a visionary set of landscape guidelines for the development of the city's public domain over the next 25 years

Wentworth Common at Sydney Olympic Parklands has been transformed into an area of play which invites curiosity, introduces the notion of a journey and inspires adventure. The play sequence is composed as an origami-like insert placed into an existing Melaleuca forest

While recalling the heritage of the site, the design retains and rehabilitates large portions of valued bushland and provides extensive high quality parkland amenity

The blocks display the different states of sandstone from a split block and roughly quarried blocks to finished and fine details. Carvings include replications of details found on the General Post Office, Government House, the Great Synagogue and St Mary's Cathedral

HASSELL envisaged transforming the Darwin Waterfront from a redundant industrial port facility into a world class, mixed-use urban community attracting local residents, business travellers and tourists alike

The design concept embodied four key principles that relate to its place: site-wide environmental strategy, interpretation of the natural wetland systems, site connectivity and community development. In the public domain, the east-west streets feature median wetlands that facilitate the water management system

The award winning Kelvin Grove Urban Village is the first inner-city development of its kind in Australia – a master planned community that demonstrates best practice in sustainable, mixed-use urban development, and brings together educational, residential, health, retail, recreational and business opportunities

Many of the project's innovations have now become normal practice, such as the preparation of the park's activity based programs in tandem with its physical design. Also, by leaving many spaces unplanned, opportunity has been provided for future generations to explore their ambitions on the site

The challenge of the project was to cost effectively deliver a range of complimentary recreation experiences that would appeal to all sectors of the community as well as providing a ceremonial setting suitable for the important task of handing back Hong Kong to China
