The existing layout of the State Library of Victoria's forecourt was reinforced in the redesign of this important and well-loved public space. Located at the northern end of Swanston Street, the forecourt had deteriorated due to heavy use and lack of maintenance. The impressive neo-classical facade of the library building was hidden behind mature but unhealthy trees that were shading the lawns, gardens and pavements of the forecourt.
The revitalisation of the forecourt was undertaken by HASSELL, in collaboration with the Melbourne City Council, and included the interpretation and renewal of the 1930s' layout. Existing flagstone pavements were relayed, bluestone pavements, kerbs and walls were replaced, and lawns, gardens and trees replanted. A new lighting scheme was introduced to illuminate the forecourt and building facade, and the restoration of existing nineteenth century statues and lights was also undertaken.
An underlying approach to the design has been to acknowledge the historical layers of the site so that the new works become part of the ongoing narrative of the library, thereby maintaining the integrity of the original design, and ensuring continued enjoyment by future generations.
