HASSELL was invited as one of eight international practices to submit a scheme for the redevelopment of The Bund, in Shanghai. Located along the Huangpu River, The Bund is the iconic waterfront area of Shanghai.
The objective of the HASSELL design was to activate the waterfront space to enliven its commercial, cultural and tourism facilities while connecting the waterfront with its surrounding urban fabric.
The HASSELL scheme drew on the maritime history of The Bund as a premier trading destination to create an urban waterfront with both local and global appeal. Featuring a network of connections - grand boulevards, public promenades, parks and plazas - our approach was both feasible and achievable within a tight implementation program.
