PTTEP Headquarters is the result of consolidating the various head office functions of the nation’s petroleum exploration company, previously spread over a number sites, into the recently constructed ENCO building. The competition-winning design by HASSELL was built around linking 18 floors with large floorplates and a total of area of 46,000 sqm. The workplace is open plan and stairs were introduced to link the floors. Breakout and hub spaces adjacent to the stair landings promote interaction by staff and visual connection to other departments. The open plan design is a marked change for PTTEP and has assisted in strengthening the office culture.
Through the briefing stages PTTEP sought to support existing activities and behaviours of its staff while encouraging knowledge transfer between them. This resulted in strategic zoning of dedicated spaces for both interaction and retreat. Complementing this was a major shift from enclosed internal offices to open plan for the majority of the senior staff to promote accessibility between staff and managers. Another element that energised collaboration within the organisation was the impact of the internal feature stairway connecting all floors and promoting ease of movement throughout the workplace. This paradigm shift met PTTEP’s aspiration to improve internal communication, encouraging greater productivity. It has already provided a positive impact on the company’s performance and well-being.
The luminous flames associated with oil exploration and production became a symbol with a special meaning for PTTEP when HASSELL began designing the interior of the new office. The ‘Colour of Flame’ concept, was inspired by the flames, and is expressed as a unique colour identity for each of the 36 floors. The colours include green, blue, light blue, and yellow, which have been arranged according to the height of the building. This link with the natural source of oil led to the concept of ‘exploring below the surface of the earth’, which is the core business of PTTEP.
A landscape concept was developed as a variation or broadening of the interior design concept of the earth’s crust. All of the external spaces are located on the roof of the building, with the lower roof decks symbolising the Earth’s crust and the higher roof deck representing the Earth’s atmosphere.
