The new Integrated Cancer Care Centre (ICCC) at Lismore Base Hospital incorporates state-of-the-art radiotherapy and medical oncology treatment in addition to expanded clinical and research facilities. The main entry level accommodates reception, radiotherapy services and clinics. The second level contains the medical oncology treatment areas, staff offices and support facilities.
This configuration provides the best functional layout for the facility while maintaining additional site area for future expansion of the unit. The building has been designed to facilitate clear way finding, provide abundant natural light to internal spaces and allow optimal access to views; helping to reduce the institutional character of the building which is critical in the case of cancer patients. This environment will support the patient journey through cancer treatment and will reduce the degree of stress experienced by cancer sufferers. External staff areas have been developed to allow staff 'time-out' from high pressure environments without the need to leave the vicinity of the units.
Key sustainability initiatives include external sun-shading louvres to the north, east and west and naturally ventilated sections of the main entry combined with zoned air conditioning systems. HASSELL also managed the Part 3A approval process from project application to preparation of the detailed Environmental Assessment.
