Details
Located in inner Adelaide at the junction of ANZAC Highway and South Road at Kurralta Park, Gallipoli Underpass provides a new and energised public domain for the benefit of the local and wider community in South Australia. HASSELL provided the urban design and landscape architecture for the project based on a simple interpretation of the 'rising sun badge' which is an important symbol within 'digger tradition'.
Incised into the landscape and integrated into the existing suburban context, the design acknowledges the cultural and historic importance of ANZAC Highway as a remembrance boulevard and incorporates a series of memorials remembering those who never returned from conflict. For example, a planting of Manchurian Pear trees forms a strong grid representing the formations of parading soldiers. The bold and simple walls of the Underpass have also been designed to represent the economic strength South Road provides for the state - now and into the future.
The project was delivered through a collaborative procurement model by a team of architects, engineers, community relations professionals and contractors who worked together with the client in one location for more than 12 months. This collaborative team produced an integrated design and construction methodology, resolved complex traffic and engineering issues and realised the project ahead of time and budget.
