The Dunstan Playhouse at the Adelaide Festival Centre has served the arts and South Australian community for well over 35 years. The 626 seat auditorium has worn well, but a refurbishment was necessary to reinvigorate the venue. A three stage redevelopment allowed the theatre to continue to meet bookings, and quiet times including Christmas and early New Year were scheduled to carry out the works.
New carpets throughout the auditorium and foyers reinterpret the Centre's octagonal heritage theme and the seats were refurbished to include new upholstery and plywood backs to improve the acoustics. New bars, front of house reception desk, integrated foyer seating and entry doors to the auditorium supplement new painted interiors. Importantly, access requirements for the disabled have improved substantially and additional disability seating added during Stage 3 is in compliance with the new Premises Act.
Accommodation is provided at the rear of the auditorium with level access via new platform lifts and in the side boxes which lead directly off the foyer level.
