The Common User Satellite forms part of the Domestic Terminal Expansion project comprising of a number of airside and landside buildings, landscape and infrastructure projects.
The HASSELL design respects the existing award winning building while enabling its expansion to meet the demands of modern airline travel and reduce the airport's impact on the environment.
The new satellite has increased the size and number of passenger gate lounges, enhanced passenger amenities and increased the number of aircraft parking bays and links to the planes. Passenger amenity has been improved through increased natural light as a result of large skylights, suspended sculptural artwork by HASSELL's in-house artist, contemporary finishes, and new gate lounges.
The geometry of the existing structure is retained and enhanced through the incorporation of new technologies in facade, roofing, finishes and building services.
The project incorporates key energy and water saving initiatives through efficient mechanical services, energy efficient lighting, waterless urinals and high insulation envelope and facade.
Other components of the HASSELL designed Domestic Terminal Expansion project, currently under construction, are a nine-level, 5,300 bay multi-level car park and domestic terminal access bridge, which is due to be operational in the second half of 2011.
