HASSELL was the lead design firm on the new western grandstand at the Adelaide Oval. Working with Cox Architects, the new facility is contemporary yet sensitive to the heritage features of the Adelaide Oval and incorporates much of the historic George Giffen Stand, the Sir Edwin Smith Stand and the Mostyn Evan Stand.
The project will accommodate 14,000 spectators over four levels and will be covered by five diagrid roof shells- highly engineered steel structures each spanning 30 metres x 30 metres and supported at only six points. The stand stretches from the existing Bradman Stand in the south to the grassed hill in the north, providing magnificent views across Adelaide Oval to the city and hills beyond.
New members' facilities include a 650 seat dining room, a 45 metre-long bar with views to the oval, and an elevated, covered outdoor terrace with views across Oval No.2 to the western parklands. Two additional bars and kiosks are provided at ground level to service the 'out the back' crowd – a great tradition at major events at the Adelaide Oval.
