The first of Australia's performing arts centres, the Adelaide Festival Centre is still acknowledged by audiences and performers as the best of its kind in the nation. Built in three stages and completed in 1980, it includes a lyric theatre seating 2,000, a smaller drama theatre, an experimental theatre and an outdoor amphitheatre. A major art installation by German environmental artist Otto Herbert Hajek adorns the plaza over a 300 space car park.
HASSELL provided complete professional services between 1970 and 1980 including the preparation of feasibility studies, presentation of sketch proposals, design development, preparation of contract documents and contract administration. The practice continues to be involved at the Centre with the completion of a master plan and a refurbishment of the Dunstan Playhouse taking place recently.
