In a feature article in one of the March 2011 issues of Australia's Business Review Weekly magazine entitled "Make it in China", Peter Duncan, HASSELL Managing Director in Asia, discussed the practice's approach on the Chinese market. HASSELL has built its successful China studios based on more than 20 years of experience working on a broad range of project types and scales across many different sectors. There are now 230 staff in five HASSELL studios across China: Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Major projects recently completed in the country include the Alibaba Headquarters in Hangzhou and Deutsche Bank Hong Kong.
Peter was asked to share his thoughts on some of the unique aspects, strengths, challenges and changes in the Chinese market and commented: "In China, things are not strictly defined in code compliance and that is a really important aspect of China's success. Because China has developed so quickly over such a short period, if it was very strict in code and regulation compliance, it would be unable to develop at the pace of growth that has been required over the past 15 to 20 years."
