Interpretation of Australian Landscape: HASSELL

International New Landscape (China)
no. 4, 2011
pp. 120-135

Issue no. 4 2011 of International New Landscape magazine features a large spread on the HASSELL interpretation of the Australian landscape.

The article features Adelaide Zoo Entrance Precinct (Adelaide, Australia), Summer Hill Flour Mills (Sydney, Australia), and the Harbour Family and Children's Centre (Melbourne, Australia).

The Adelaide Zoo Entrance Precinct dispenses with the traditional boundary between the Zoo and its surrounds, inviting guests to experience the sights and sounds of the Zoo from its public forecourts. The article notes that, "Landscape and built form for the project have been considered as a single interwoven environment to create a unique Australian civic space."

The Summer Hill Flour Mills master plan presents "a rare opportunity to retain and reuse much of the existing industrial fabric of the precinct." The landscaping will introduce open spaces with pedestrian links through the site to access a light rail transport service, currently under construction.

The Harbour Family and Children's Centre is located in the heart of Melbourne's Docklands precinct. The Centre features two semi-mature peppercorn trees and the gardens "vary in theme across the site to showcase the diversity of the natural world. The children are playfully involved in gardening, discovering and learning about nature and environmental issues."
