Gallipoli Underpass

The Public Domain (Australia)
Issue 12, January 2011
pp. 2-4

The new Gallipoli Underpass in Adelaide was featured in the January 2011 issue of The Public Domain.

Described in the article as being "more than an important piece of transport infrastructure critical to the economic development of South Australia," because on another level it's a direct and very deliberate reference to the ANZAC Highway, in particular its symbolism as a memorial to the fallen Australian soldiers of World War One.

Gallipoli Underpass has been created on South Road, one of Adelaide's busiest and most important road corridors, at its intersection with ANZAC Highway. Research into the history of the Highway showed that it had been planted with claret ash trees during the 1930s as a living memorial to the fallen.

The design of the Underpass featured a motif drawn from the distinctive Rising Sun Badge, which synonymous with the Australian soldier.

The Gallipoli Underpass is also, as the article concludes, "a case study in collaboration - the importance of urban design being a fundamental part of the overall design process from the very start, rather than an add-on at the end."
